Samudera Indonesia was founded by Mr. Soedarpo Sastrosatomo, a legend in the Indonesian shipping industry. Just after Indonesian Independence and his time as a diplomat in New York and Washington complete, Mr Soedarpo upon returning to Indonesia had a dream, "...to connect the islands."
When opportunity presented itself to the young entrepreneur, he seized it, adding a shipping agency business to his successful trading company in 1953. After a change of government regulation opened the shipping industry, Mr Soedarpo began acquiring ships, began building infrastructure and began hiring people who could manage.
By the 1970's, a combination of principle, entrepreneurship, hardwork and a strong business network enabled Mr Soedarpo to assemble a fleet of 11 ships, earning for him the moniker "King of Vessels" within the Indonesian media and society. In the late 1980's, the Government again fostered an industry paradigm shift, this time to containers. Again, Mr Soedarpo moved quickly and created the efficient "spoke and hub" network, which has withstood the vagaries of the market and launched Samudera into a regional shipping force.
His entrepreneurship and intuition in dealing with business challenges have engendered a strategy which remains with the Company to this day. After almost half a century in the shipping business, in 2000 Mr Soedarpo was awarded a Lifetime Achievement in the Shipping and Maritime Industry by Maritime Lloyd Asia, for leading Samudera from a small Indonesian shipping line to one of the region's leading transportation and logistics groups.
Today, Samudera does indeed connect islands: the world.
